Once hailed for its captivating artistry, microblading, a manual technique where an artist cuts the skin to mimic natural hair strokes, has faced scrutiny as we witness how these strokes age within the skin.

While the immediate results of microblading may be beautiful, the long-term impact on your skin can be more detrimental than anticipated. In response, I discontinued offering microblading in 2020, believing that the microshading technique provided a superior alternative to achieve the desired results.

In severe cases, the damage to your skin could be irreversible, making it extremely challenging to work over, correct, or remove from the skin.

Primary Concerns:

• Not Semi-Permanent, but Permanent: Contrary to popular belief, microblading is not semi-permanent; it’s permanent. The misconception arose from the hope that the treatment’s effects would only last a year or so, but in reality, microblading often outlasts a softly shaded eyebrow design.
• Compromising Skin Integrity: Cosmetic tattooing should remain within the top layer of the dermis. However, artists can inadvertently go deeper, causing pigment migration and expansion under the skin. Excessive cutting compromises the skin’s integrity, eventually turning it into scar tissue.
• Strokes Alteration: Initially, microbladed strokes appear crisply implanted into the skin. However, as the tattoo ages, inconsistencies in pigment density occur. Some strokes expand more than others, altering the original brow shape and, in unfortunate cases, resembling a poorly shaded eyebrow.
• Undesired Color Aging: Over time, commonly used pigments can cause the colors to age to undesirable cool tones, such as blue, green, or gray. This makes color correction significantly challenging.
• Difficulty in Working Over: Contrary to common belief, working over existing microblading is not straightforward. It often requires converting to an ombre powder brow, blending meticulously between strokes to ensure a balanced and pleasing result.
• Challenging Removal: Microblading makes the removal process more challenging, pushing pigment further into the skin with each session. Crisp microbladed results generally last 1-3 years, making the removal process lengthier.
• Discomfort and Pain: Microblading can be painful, cutting the skin during the process. Compared to microshading, it’s less tolerable, even with numbing. Microshading, on the other hand, scratches the skin to deposit pigment.
• Natural Look vs. Desired Volume: Microblading, mimicking hair strokes, may not be sufficient for those accustomed to a more filled-in look achieved with powder. Hair strokes need spacing, and excess strokes risk a botched shaded brow appearance.
• Exploring Better Alternatives: With advancements in the permanent makeup industry, alternatives like Ombre brows, Powder brows, or machine hair strokes provide more effective options for individuals seeking eyebrow tattooing.
